Every year, millions of Muslims from around the world gather in Saudi Arabia to participate in the annual haj pilgrimage. This year, tragedy struck as fourteen Jordanians lost their lives during the pilgrimage, with some succumbing to heat stroke. Additionally, seventeen others are reported missing, adding to the somber atmosphere.

According to the Jordanian foreign ministry, six of the fatalities were heat-related, a stark reminder of the extreme conditions in the region. With temperatures soaring to a scorching 47 degrees Celsius (116 Fahrenheit) in Mecca, the dangers faced by pilgrims are evident.

Despite efforts to mitigate risks, incidents like stampedes, tent fires, and heat-related illnesses continue to claim lives at the haj. The Saudi health ministry issued warnings about the soaring temperatures, advising pilgrims to stay hydrated and avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours.

The Jordanian foreign ministry is working closely with Saudi authorities to handle the aftermath, ensuring that the deceased are respectfully buried or transported according to their family’s wishes. The tragic history of the haj is exemplified by the 2015 stampede near Mecca that resulted in the loss of over 2,000 lives.
