The Changing Mississippi River: A Metaphor for People
Just like the Mississippi River, people are constantly changing and evolving. The river we see today is not the same as the one that existed ten years ago. The boundaries have shifted, the riverbanks have moved, and the silt and fish have all shifted with time.
So, what does it mean when we talk about “the Mississippi River”? It’s more than just a body of water – it’s a label, a placeholder, and a point of reference. When the Mississippi River behaves unexpectedly, we take notice and comment on it.
But people are no different. What if we were only known for the best or worst thing we ever did? Our past actions do not define who we are today, and they certainly do not determine who we will become in the future. Yet, we are often labeled based on our past deeds.
Similarly, organizations, brands, and even our neighbors are often viewed as static entities. But just like rivers, people change. Our experiences, growth, and choices shape us into who we are at any given moment.
When a label no longer serves us, it’s time to let it go. Holding onto grudges and outdated perceptions only weigh us down and prevent us from moving forward in a positive direction.
