As an entrepreneur, I’ve learned that sometimes the biggest setbacks can lead to the greatest opportunities. My childhood dream of becoming a professional soccer player came crashing down when I realized it wasn’t meant to be. But that disappointment fueled my journey toward a new career path in entrepreneurship.

Growing up in Miami and later moving to Hyderabad, India, soccer was always my passion. I had the chance to train with top teams and play at various levels, but ultimately, a professional contract eluded me. The moment I accepted that my soccer dream was over was a turning point in my life. I felt lost and directionless until I found a new purpose at Babson College, where I discovered my passion for building ventures.

Surrounded by like-minded individuals, I launched Kickstart Sports, a consulting business helping athletes find opportunities abroad. Despite setbacks caused by the pandemic, my experiences led me to create DesignAI, a company that revolutionizes urban development through technology.

Lessons Learned and How You Can Apply Them

1. Rebuild confidence and find a new purpose

After my soccer career ended, I had to redefine myself outside of the sport. I explored new activities and interests, which eventually led me to entrepreneurship. My advice: seek out new experiences to discover what truly excites and motivates you.

2. Build and leverage a strong support system

During tough times, a solid support system is crucial. Mentors, friends, and therapy helped me navigate challenges and stay focused. My advice: cultivate relationships that challenge and support you, and maintain them for continuous growth.

3. Embrace failure as a stepping stone

Failure taught me resilience and the importance of learning from setbacks. Don’t fear failure; use it as an opportunity to improve and refine your approach. Every setback is a chance to grow, both personally and professionally.

When faced with the disappointment of realizing I wasn’t good enough to pursue my soccer dream, I discovered the resilience and determination needed to succeed as an entrepreneur. Challenges will arise, but with the right mindset and support system, you can overcome obstacles and carve out your own path to success.
