After Melinda French Gates’ announcement in May that she was dedicating $1 billion to women’s organizations, part of that vision has now become a reality. French Gates recently launched Action for Women’s Health, a $250 million fund aimed at supporting women’s mental and physical health globally.
In a promotional video for the fund, French Gates highlighted the importance of prioritizing women’s health, stating, “Women’s health continues to be an afterthought, impacting not only individuals but also families, communities, and economies. Thankfully, there are numerous organizations around the world working to change that.”

Through Action for Women’s Health, grassroots organizations addressing women’s health issues will receive funding. Each awardee will receive between $1 million and $5 million, with multiple rounds of review before final selection. Winners will be announced by the end of next year.
Applicants must focus on women’s mental or physical health and meet four criteria: impact, scalability, equity, and feasibility. Impact is assessed based on the nonprofit’s contributions, with a focus on effectiveness.
An organizational readiness tool is available to help applicants determine if they meet the requirements. Eligibility is limited to certain types of organizations, and a minimum of two years of audited financial records is required.
Action for Women’s Health is currently accepting applications, with a deadline of January 10, 2025. Organizations must register their intent to apply by December 3, 2024.
