As the glasses clinked, it was clear the event was a massive success, at least on the surface. I had just delivered the closing keynote at a business conference and now found myself sitting at a bar, reflecting on the future with the event’s founder. We discussed plans for a bigger and better event next year, revenue goals, and his ambitious hiring spree to grow his team. His business goals were on point, but when I asked about his personal goals outside of business, his answer was vague.

After a few old-fashioneds, he simply mentioned wanting his family to be happy and healthy. I couldn’t help but think about his response later that night. It was clear that his personal life was not as healthy as his business. Unfortunately, this scenario is all too common in the world of entrepreneurship. We become so focused on business goals that other aspects of our lives take a backseat.

Since 2011, I have made a point never to let my business become the sole focus of my life. I believe in a holistic approach to goal-setting, one that encompasses all aspects of life, not just business.

The 6-Part Framework for Holistic Goal Setting

Inspired by Michael Hyatt’s Best Year Ever program, I have developed my own 6-step process for setting goals that encompass all areas of life.

To guide you through this process, I have created a framework that covers:

  • What Do You Want?
  • Why Do You Want It?
  • Create Your Top 3 Goals for 2024
  • Next Steps
  • What’s the Trigger?
  • Who Will Support You?

Each step is designed to help you set specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-based goals that align with all aspects of your life, not just your business.

Part 1: What Do You Want?

Start by breaking down your life into categories that are important to you, such as emotional, intellectual, physical, relational, business, hobbies, and financial. Within each category, identify your aspirations and what you hope to achieve.

It’s important to revisit these aspirations annually, as they may change over time.

Part 2: Why Do You Want It?

Understand the why behind each aspiration to give you the drive to achieve them. Without a purpose, goals are merely dreams.

This exercise helps you get to the root of your actions and motivates you to overcome obstacles.

Part 3: Create Your Top 3 Goals for 2024

Select 3 specific SMART goals that support your aspirations. Ensure that each goal is Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Risky, and Time-based.

Narrowing your focus to 3 goals allows you to move through the process more efficiently.

Part 4: Next Steps

Identify the next steps for each goal to create momentum towards achievement. Taking the first step is crucial in getting started.

For example, if your goal is to compete in a tournament, the first step might be registering for the event.

Part 5: What’s the Trigger?

Create triggers that will activate your goals, making it easier to follow through. Simple strategies like setting reminders or preparing in advance can help you stay on track.

Removing friction and incorporating habits into your routine can make achieving your goals more manageable.

Part 6: Who Will Support You?

Identify individuals who can support you in your journey towards achieving your goals. Whether it’s a colleague, friend, or family member, having a support system can keep you accountable and motivated.

Don’t let your business goals overshadow other important aspects of your life. Take a holistic approach to goal-setting and strive for balance in all areas. Here’s to an amazing 2024!
