Embracing the Magic of Technology
Early in my career, I had the privilege of working with Arthur C. Clarke, a visionary who famously said, “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.”
Magic, in this context, isn’t such a bad thing. In fact, we are surrounded by advanced technology that often seems like magic because we haven’t taken the time to truly understand it.
Recently, a friend showed me his electric water bottle. It had a tiny USB-charged battery in the lid and claimed to “get rid of impurities.” I couldn’t help but wonder, where do these impurities go?
While it might be more satisfying to believe in the magic happening inside the bottle, the reality is far less mystical. The device may emit a light that kills some microorganisms, but in a city like New York, it’s unlikely there’s much to worry about, regardless of the battery’s presence.
Instead of magic, perhaps we should consider the idea that “Any sufficiently advanced technology is worth understanding.” If we take the time to comprehend the technology around us, we can use it effectively, make improvements, and share it confidently.
Artificial intelligence, rice cookers, vaccines – these are not magical entities. They are tangible technologies that we can study, enhance, and utilize to benefit society.
By embracing and understanding the technology that surrounds us, we can unlock its true potential and make informed decisions about its use. Let’s demystify the world of technology and harness its power for good.
