Welcome to the Shangri-La Dialogue 2024 in Singapore, where global security takes center stage. Chinese defence chief Dong Jun is set to address the summit on Sunday, discussing crucial global security issues. However, the presence of Ukrainian President Volodmyr Zelenskiy adds an intriguing dynamic to the event.

Just a day earlier, U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin emphasized the United States’ commitment to the Indo-Pacific region amidst challenges in security assistance for Ukraine and the conflict in Gaza. Austin reiterated the significance of a secure Asia for the United States, highlighting their enduring presence in the region.

Dong’s upcoming speech is anticipated to touch on China’s stance regarding the South China Sea and Taiwan. In response to Austin’s remarks, Chinese Lieutenant General Jing Jianfeng criticized the U.S. Indo-Pacific strategy, alleging intentions to destabilize the region.

The arrival of President Zelenskiy has added another dimension to the summit, with his focus on promoting peace and stability. Zelenskiy is slated to advocate for a Ukraine peace conference in June. Notably, Russia and China have opted not to participate in the event.

On the sidelines, Zelenskiy engaged in discussions with other leaders, including Timor-Leste President Jose Ramos-Horta and Indonesia’s president-elect, Prabowo Subianto. The absence of a Russian delegation, following the 2022 Ukraine invasion, underscores the tensions surrounding the dialogue.

As the Shangri-La Dialogue concludes, expect further bilateral meetings to shape the ongoing security discourse. Stay tuned for the latest updates and insights from the premier international security summit organized by the International Institute of Strategic Studies.
