The vibrant city of Havana, known for its lively streets and bustling nightlife, found itself plunged into darkness on a fateful Friday night. A countrywide blackout, triggered by the collapse of a major power plant, left the majority of Cuba’s 10 million residents without electricity.
A Glimmer of Hope
Amidst the darkness, there was a glimmer of hope as power was slowly restored to scattered pockets of Havana. The city’s major hospitals saw lights flicker back on, providing a ray of light in an otherwise bleak situation.
Efforts to Restore Power
Grid operator UNE worked tirelessly to restart oil-fired generation plants, aiming to bring back electricity to broader areas of the country. The government took drastic measures, closing schools, non-essential industries, and ordering state workers to go home in a bid to conserve power.
A Struggle for Survival
This blackout marked a new low for Cuba, a country already grappling with severe shortages of food, fuel, water, and medicine. Residents faced unprecedented challenges as daily life came to a standstill, with commerce halted, and tourists left frustrated by the lack of basic amenities.
