When it comes to leadership, qualities like “analytical prowess,” “restless inventiveness,” and “strength of will” often take the spotlight. However, in my experience, focusing too much on these qualities can be a mistake. I have found that empathy, compassion, and care have a much more significant impact on a company’s success. By incorporating these “soft skills” into my own businesses, I have been able to achieve the level of success I enjoy today.
According to a study by LinkedIn, “92% of talent professionals say [soft skills] matter as much or more than hard skills when they hire, and 80% say they’re increasingly important to company success.” This just goes to show how vital these skills are in the business world.
Not everyone is cut out to be a leader, but understanding communication, problem-solving, and open-mindedness can greatly enhance any professional’s value. These skills go beyond the workplace and impact every aspect of life.
1. Empathy
Empathy is the ability to understand and relate to other people’s emotions and experiences. It fosters engagement among staff, creating a sense of purpose and trust. Practicing empathy has taught me humility and inspired me to start many of the businesses I own today. Listening and prioritizing the needs of others are key components of empathy.
2. Compassion
Compassion goes beyond empathy, involving taking action to help others. By incorporating compassion into the workplace, such as allowing employees to bring pets or children to work, you create a more inclusive and diverse company culture. Reflecting on your own experiences of hardship can help you understand the importance of compassion.
3. Adaptability
Adaptability is the ability to approach change with openness and understanding. Maintaining a positive mindset and being willing to pivot when necessary can greatly increase the likelihood of success in business. Meditation and a perspective of gratitude can help foster adaptability.
4. Integrity
Integrity is crucial in running a business, requiring a dedication to acting on morals and values. It involves honesty, fairness, and the willingness to learn from failure. Maintaining integrity, even in challenging situations, is essential for long-term success.
Soft skills like empathy, compassion, adaptability, and integrity require cultivation over time. While anyone can obtain a degree, not everyone can effectively practice these skills. They are indispensable for running a business and living a happy and healthy life.
