HBO’s latest documentary, “Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery,” has caused quite a stir by claiming to have cracked the enigma of Bitcoin’s mysterious creator, Satoshi Nakamoto.
The film puts forward a bold theory, suggesting that Canadian Bitcoin Core developer Peter Todd is actually the elusive Nakamoto. However, Todd quickly dismissed these claims, labeling them as “ludicrous” in an interview with the BBC.

Todd has expressed concerns about his safety following the documentary’s release, as Nakamoto is rumored to possess a Bitcoin wallet holding over $65 billion in value, making him potentially one of the world’s wealthiest individuals.
Crypto publications like CoinTelegraph have been quick to critique the documentary, pointing out “contradictions and timeline errors” in its narrative. They suggest that HBO may have taken Todd’s sarcastic comments out of context when he jokingly mentioned being Satoshi in the film.
Bloomberg has reported that the search for Satoshi Nakamoto’s true identity has been ongoing since at least 2011. Over the years, various individuals, including physicist Dorian Nakamoto and computer scientist Nick Szabo, have been mistakenly identified as the elusive creator of Bitcoin.

Interestingly, Todd is not the first person to humorously or seriously claim to be Satoshi Nakamoto. In a notable case, Australian Craig Wright was debunked by a U.K. judge after asserting his identity as Bitcoin’s inventor.
