Life at Nvidia: A Deep Dive into the $3 Trillion AI Chipmaker’s Culture

What is it like to work at Nvidia, the $3 trillion AI chipmaker with a storied work culture over 30 years in the making?

Long-time CEO Jensen Huang, in a recent interview, mentioned his approach to employee development, stating that instead of layoffs, he prefers to “torture employees into greatness.” And it seems like he may not have been joking.

Being the AI chip brain behind ChatGPT and other popular forms of AI has led Nvidia — and its vested employees — to benefit financially from the AI boom, with a recent poll revealing that a staggering 76% of Nvidia employees are millionaires and one in three have a net worth exceeding $20 million, all thanks to the company’s growth trajectory. Since October 2022, Nvidia’s stock has skyrocketed over 1,000%.

However, a recent Bloomberg report shed light on the less glamorous aspects of working at Nvidia, despite the financial success it has brought to many employees. The report described Nvidia’s work culture as a “pressure cooker,” with employees facing long working hours, heated meetings, and the constant need to stand out among their many colleagues.

Ten current and former Nvidia employees shared stories of working well into the night, attending numerous meetings daily, and receiving public scrutiny for working less than their peers. Despite these challenges, the company has managed to maintain a low turnover rate, with employees incentivized to stay for the long haul due to stock grants that vest over four years.

Nvidia’s flat organizational structure, with CEO Jensen Huang having 60 direct reports, also adds to its appeal as an employer. While the company’s work environment may be described as intense and demanding, the opportunities for financial growth and career development seem to outweigh the challenges for many employees.
