My Journey Back to Work After 12 Years of FIRE: Why I Only Lasted Four Months

After 12 years of financial independence retire early (FIRE), I made the decision to go back to work. However, my return to the workforce was short-lived, lasting only four months. In this post, I will share my story of what went wrong and the lessons I learned from this experience. I waited months to share this post to ensure I was thinking logically and not emotionally.

Background on Why I Went Back to Work

In April 2023, I started seriously considering going back to work after experiencing work freedom since leaving my day job in finance in 2012. The rising cost of college for my children in 2036 and my desire to generate extra income were the key factors behind my decision to return to work.

After exploring various opportunities, I eventually joined a fintech startup as a part-time consultant. Despite having a good offer and a founding role at the startup, I found myself struggling to adjust to the demands of the role.

Challenges Faced in the Consulting Role

One of the main challenges I faced in my consulting role was the lack of a clear fit between my part-time status and the demands of the startup. The endless work, constant meetings, and interference with my personal time made it difficult for me to maintain a balance.

Furthermore, the heavy editing of my work and the lack of appreciation from colleagues also contributed to my decision to leave the role. The mismatch in expectations and the management style of the CEO were additional factors that led to my early departure.

Lessons Learned and Moving Forward

From this experience, I learned the importance of finding the right fit in a work opportunity and setting clear expectations upfront. I also realized the impact of personal values, such as family time and work-life balance, on job satisfaction.

As I look towards the future, I plan to wait until after my daughter starts school full-time before considering another work opportunity. This will give me a better understanding of my free time and priorities.

Recommendation for Those Considering a Career Change

If you are considering quitting your job or making a career change, I recommend exploring options that align with your values and goals. Negotiating a severance package or seeking alternative sources of income can provide financial security during this transition.

Remember, finding the right fit in a work opportunity is essential for long-term satisfaction and success. It’s okay to walk away from a situation that doesn’t align with your values and priorities. Stay true to yourself and your goals, and the right opportunities will come your way.
