I’m Andrew Kamphey, the resident Google Sheets Wizard behind Better Sheets, a suite of Tools, Templates, and Tutorials for Google Sheets users. In the first three years, Better Sheets generated a total revenue of $200,000, with revenue averaging around $5k monthly and peaking at $10k during special occasions.
Recently, I introduced a $9 per month membership plan alongside my lifetime deal priced over $200, aiming to provide a diverse range of learning options for Better Sheets users.
What’s your backstory, and how did you come up with the idea?
After 5 years of managing Google Sheets at a startup, I ventured into entrepreneurship. I initially started with a newsletter on Influencer Marketing, followed by failed attempts at launching a SaaS.
However, the uniqueness of my Google Sheets planners caught people’s attention. In April 2020, amidst the COVID lockdown, I launched Better Sheets to showcase great Google Sheets and provide tutorials.
What started as a platform for tutorials evolved into a membership-based learning hub, attracting customers through innovation and user-centric tools.
Describe the process of launching and growing the business.
The business initially focused on tutorials but transitioned to creating tools for Google Sheets users. Expanding into Google Sheet Add-ons and web-based tools proved beneficial, with products like Sheet Styles and Tiny Sheets gaining popularity.
The shift towards tools and Add-ons led to a broader customer base and increased engagement. Leveraging platforms like Udemy and AppSumo significantly boosted customer acquisition and revenue generation.
What has worked to attract new customers?
Listings on AppSumo Marketplace have been instrumental in attracting customers, contributing to a significant portion of revenue. Additionally, courses on Udemy have facilitated free traffic and new customer acquisition.
Developing a diverse range of tools and Add-ons for Google Sheets users has expanded the customer base and enhanced brand visibility. Collaboration with key industry platforms has also been crucial in driving growth and engagement.
What are your plans for the future, and what are you currently working on?
Currently, I’m focused on creating a course on Selling Spreadsheets, aiming to share my expertise and insights on selling spreadsheet products. The goal is to empower more individuals to explore the potential of spreadsheet sales and enhance collaboration in the industry.
Continuing to develop innovative tools and Add-ons, my aim is to streamline processes and provide value to users through automation and simplicity. Embracing an abundance mindset, I strive to make spreadsheets more accessible and engaging for a wider audience.
What tools do you use for your business?
Key tools integral to my business operations include Google Sheets for overall management, Google Workspace for internal organization, Gmail for communication, Loom for video recording, and Gumroad for tool sales.
Utilizing platforms like AppSumo Marketplace and Descript for video editing has been crucial in enhancing productivity and workflow efficiency.
Do you have any advice for other entrepreneurs who are just starting out or want to get started?
Establishing an accountability group or network can significantly boost productivity and motivation. By regularly sharing progress, setting goals, and obtaining feedback, entrepreneurs can stay focused and driven towards their objectives.
Encouraging collaboration and sharing ideas fosters a creative and supportive environment, facilitating growth and learning. Embracing challenges and seeking constructive criticism can lead to personal and professional development, propelling entrepreneurial endeavors to new heights.
