The Joys and Challenges of Being a Full-Time Father
When my son was born in April 2017, I made a promise to myself to become a full-time father until he turned five. This commitment led me to sell our largest rental property, a decision that might have altered our retirement plans, but family always comes first. Fast forward to December 2019 when my daughter was born, and I made the same promise to be a full-time father until she reached the age of five. With my daughter starting full-time school in September 2024, the transition from full-time to part-time fatherhood is on the horizon.
As I reflect on over seven years of being a full-time father, I realize the difference between full-time and part-time fatherhood and the challenges and rewards that come with each.
The Difference Between Full-Time and Part-Time Fatherhood
Being a father is a lifelong commitment, but the time we dedicate to our children can vary. A full-time father is one who spends more time caring for his children than on other activities like work. On the other hand, a part-time father devotes more time to work than childcare.
The Rewards and Challenges of Full-Time Fatherhood
Full-time fatherhood comes with its fair share of challenges, such as long hours, sleepless nights, and the constant need to be present to ensure your child’s safety. It’s a demanding role that requires immense patience, understanding, and love. However, the rewards are priceless. Witnessing your child’s milestones, from their first babble to their first steps, is an unparalleled joy that makes all the sacrifices worth it.
While being a full-time father may not always be easy, the bond you create with your child and the memories you build together are irreplaceable.
The Importance of Acknowledging Full-Time Fathers
Despite the challenges and societal norms, it’s essential to recognize and appreciate full-time fathers for the valuable role they play in their children’s lives. By sharing our experiences and raising awareness about full-time fatherhood, we can help break stereotypes and provide support to fathers who choose to prioritize their children.
Celebrating Fatherhood in All Its Forms
Whether you’re a full-time father, a part-time father, or somewhere in between, your dedication to your children is commendable. As we navigate the complexities of parenthood, let’s celebrate fatherhood in all its forms and support each other on this incredible journey.
