Amazon employees are up in arms after CEO Andy Jassy announced a new return-to-office mandate, requiring a five-day-a-week in-person work schedule by January 2. According to a recent survey by Blind of 2,585 Amazon employees, a staggering 91% expressed dissatisfaction with this new policy.
But the discontent doesn’t stop there. A significant 73% of employees are considering leaving their jobs in response to the mandate. It seems morale is at an all-time low as many employees are already looking for other opportunities.
Despite Jassy’s assertion that the new policy aims to strengthen the company culture, Blind’s survey paints a different picture. More than a majority of corporate Amazon employees are against the five-day office return and approximately 80% are aware of colleagues actively seeking new employment.
The impact of this policy is far-reaching, with even job candidates dropping out of the recruitment pipeline due to the new mandate. It’s clear that employees, both current and potential, are not in favor of this sweeping change.
One verified Amazon professional expressed their frustration, stating, “RTO blanket policy is crazy, particularly for those of us who were hired remotely and far from an office. I have kids and family here so unwilling to relocate.” The apprehension of potential layoffs only adds to the hesitancy of embracing the mandated return to the office.
As of now, Amazon has not responded to the findings of the Blind survey conducted between September 17-19, 2024, among U.S. verified employees. The discontent among employees is palpable, and the repercussions of this new policy are becoming more evident as employees begin to contemplate their next steps.
