As a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) consultant, I can attest that systemic racism, sexism, and other institutional factors do play a role in hindering the success of entrepreneurs of color. However, sometimes the barriers to success come from within rather than from external sources. Here’s an exploration of what internalized oppression is, how it may be holding you back from success, and strategies to overcome it.

Understanding Internalized Oppression

Internalized oppression refers to the belief among historically marginalized groups that negative stereotypes and messages about their inferiority are true, while also believing in the superiority of the dominant group. This phenomenon can manifest in various ways in your life.

1. Feeling Unworthy of Opportunities

Internalized oppression and imposter syndrome may lead you to feel unworthy of seizing great opportunities that come your way in your professional life. Research indicates that imposter syndrome affects a significant portion of the population, with race amplifying its effects, particularly for Black individuals. Recognizing how internalized oppression influences your confidence in facing opportunities is crucial.

Tip: Combat negative self-perceptions with positive affirmations. Acknowledge and celebrate your strengths and talents to boost your confidence in pursuing opportunities.

2. Amplifying Dominant Voices
